# Whakatane.org > Whakatāne and Ōhope without the brochure: no Whakaari landings since 2019, so come for a slow month of beach, kiwi, harbour and Ngāti Awa history. An Ultimate Travel Guide (BootsnAll Travel Network) for Whakatāne and Ōhope, New Zealand. Updated 2026-10-03. Editorial, no ads, no affiliate links. Full record: https://www.whakatane.org/place.json ## Thesis The volcano is closed. Stay a month for the town. For thirty years Whakatāne sold one thing to the world: a boat ride to Whakaari/White Island and a walk across the crater floor of an active volcano. On 9 December 2019 the volcano erupted with 47 people on the island; 22 died and 25 were seriously hurt. No one has landed a tour there since. The company that ran the boats, White Island Tours, told a court in 2024 that it had not traded for over three years, and its old web address is now a parked domain. The prosecutions, the appeal and a coronial inquest that resumed in Auckland in September 2026 are still working through who should have stopped it. You can circle the island in a small plane for NZ$759 a head (minimum two adults) or see it steaming on the horizon from Kōhī Point for nothing. To Ngāti Awa the island is an ancestor. Older guides and listing sites still treat it as a day out. Take the island away and Whakatāne becomes what it always was underneath: a small river-mouth town with the meeting house that came home, and over the hill, Ōhope, an 11 km beach between surf and the Ōhiwa Harbour. Mataatua wharenui was built by Ngāti Awa in 1875, taken by the Crown for exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, London and Dunedin, returned under the 1996 settlement and stood again in Whakatāne in September 2011. Kiwi live in the scenic reserves above town. Godwits arrive on the harbour each spring from the far north. Moutohorā/Whale Island, 9 km offshore, is a predator-free reserve you can land on only with a DOC-approved guide. None of this suits a one-night stop on the way to Rotorua. The bus to Ōhope runs eight times a day, Monday to Saturday only, budget beds are thin, the surf club only patrols one stretch of a long beach, and only in summer, and the kiwi you came for are very unlikely to show themselves. What the place rewards is the thing Sean Keener went there for in 2011: picking one beach, staying long enough to know the bus driver and the tide table, and letting the people be the attraction. Come between February and April, after the Christmas crowd has gone home and while the water is still warm, and stay a week at least. ## PlaceScore 6.3/10 (editorial v1) - Value: 5/10. Fair for New Zealand and no better: a shared-bathroom single at the Whakatane Hotel starts at NZ$75, motels run about NZ$99 to NZ$220 a night, true dorm beds are scarce, and every international visitor now pays a NZ$100 levy. - Getting around: 4.5/10. One subsidised Whakatāne to Ōhope bus, eight runs a day Monday to Saturday and none on Sundays or public holidays; a daily flight and bus reach town, but Ōhiwa, the trailheads and the wider district are car country. - Crowds and timing: 7/10. Busy around Christmas, New Year and January holidays at the West End and the surf club; much quieter for the rest of the year, and the council's own pitch for winter is space to yourself. - Safety and hassle: 7.5/10. No touts or scams to speak of; the real risks are physical: rips on a beach patrolled only in one spot in summer, tides on the Ōtarawairere track, and an active volcano offshore. - Food and drink: 6/10. Ordinary small-town eating done reasonably well: wharf fish and chips, Ōhiwa oysters from a Māori-owned farm, a local brewery and cafes where breakfast runs NZ$19 to NZ$27, with little depth beyond that. - Indie fit: 7.5/10. The best things here are free or community-run and open to anyone who stays put: the reserves, the harbour, the kiwi walks, the beach; Ngāti Awa's marae is approached by arrangement, which is how it should be. ## Bullshit flags - Claim: "Walk inside New Zealand's most active volcano on a White Island Tours day trip." Reality: There have been no on-land tours since the December 2019 eruption killed 22 people. White Island Tours had not traded for over three years by 2024 and its whiteisland.co.nz address is now a parked domain. The district's own visitor site offers flights, charters and lookouts instead. - Claim: "Book the Moutohora Island Sanctuary cruise and tour with White Island Tours (still listed with prices on booking sites)." Reality: Landings on Moutohorā need a DOC permit or an approved concessionaire. The listing still sells a White Island Tours trip, but the operator advertising a guided landing in 2026 is Diveworks, at NZ$140 per adult including the DOC landing fee. Check who is actually running the boat before you pay. - Claim: "Ōhope: voted New Zealand's best and most loved beach." Reality: The title comes from a four-week AA Facebook poll in 2014. In the NZ Herald readers' vote, Ōhope did not take the top spot in 2025 or 2026; Waipū Cove won both years. Ōhope is a fine, long, safe-feeling beach. The award is twelve years old. - Claim: "Ōhope is one of the safest swimming beaches in New Zealand." Reality: It is a 10 km open surf beach patrolled by one club from one spot, only in summer, and the West End can run hard rips on bigger swells. Swim between the flags, and outside the patrol season treat it like any unpatrolled surf beach. - Claim: "Kiwi Capital of the World: see kiwi in the wild right on the edge of town." Reality: The kiwi are real and close, but nocturnal and shy. The Kiwi Trust's own night-walk listing says it is very unlikely you will see a wild kiwi, and the council adds that a flightless brown bird seen in daylight is a weka. Go to hear them call. - Claim: "The owners of Whakaari were convicted and fined over the eruption." Reality: Whakaari Management Ltd was convicted in 2023 and fined over NZ$1 million with NZ$4.88 million reparation, but the High Court quashed that conviction on 27 February 2025, finding the landowner did not manage or control the tour workplace. Other parties' convictions stand. A coronial inquest into the deaths began its second phase in September 2026. ## What has changed - 2024-10-01: New Zealand's International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy rose from NZ$35 to NZ$100, paid with your visa or NZeTA. Budget for it before you arrive; it is charged per person on most international visitors. - 2025-02-27: The High Court quashed Whakaari Management Ltd's health and safety conviction over the 2019 eruption. Many articles and guides still describe the island's owners as convicted. That is no longer true; other parties' convictions remain. - 2025-10: Air Chathams said government support would let it put a dedicated Saab 340 on Whakatāne to Auckland, bring back early and late business-friendly flights, and trial interline connections with Air New Zealand. In April 2025 it had warned it might quit the route. The town keeps its only scheduled air link, with better connections onward. A small airline on a loss-making route is still a thin thread. - 2025-10-03: The coronial inquest into the Whakaari deaths opened at Whakatāne District Court; phase two, on regulation and risk before the eruption, began in Auckland on 14 September 2026. The eruption is unfinished business in this town. Expect it in the local news, and be careful how you talk about the island. - 2026-04-07: GeoNet reported ash emissions from Whakaari up to 24 March 2026 and kept the alert at Level 2, saying it will stay at a minimum of Level 2 until on-island monitoring is reinstated. The island is still active and is no longer watched in real time from the ground. Scenic flights and charters operate around that. ## Costs (NZD, 2026-10) - Budget room at the Whakatane Hotel (single with shared bathroom, or a four-bed bunk room): 75 to 150 per room per night - Mid-range motel unit, Whakatāne or Ōhope: 99 to 220 per unit per night -
